4月13日にmumeiで、NYをベースに活躍するパフォーマンスデュオTalibam!とアーティストJulia Santoliによるパフォーマンスイベントを開催いたします。
Talibam!のうちの一人であるMatthew Mottelは、様々なメディアや美学を持つアーティストとのコラボレーションパフォーマンスを行い、それを父であり写真家のSyeus Mottelが1960年代から70年代にかけて撮影した政治・文化的な写真と組み合わせることで、ニューメディアと歴史的アーカイブを結び付け、瞬間的でアーティスティックな創作を行います。ほとんどのアーカイブは何十年もの間、作家含め誰にも見られることはありませんでした。現在に公開するためにフォーラムを行い、Matthewはこの未調査の文化史を社会的で芸術的ハプニングに変貌させます。
今回のイベントでは、Syeus MottelのアーカイブをもとにMatthewが制作した動画作品を発表し、また主に声を用いてパフォーマンスを行うアーティストのJulia SantoliとTalibam!がコラボレーション行います。

Matthew Mottel pairs the images from his father, Syeus Mottel's photographic archive of 1960's and 70's political and cultural images with collaborative performances uniting artists of various media and aesthetics with his fathers historical image to create a new media environment connecting archive with in the moment artistic creation.
Much of the archive has not be seen by anyone in decades, including the artist. By choosing a public forum in which to present this archive, Matthew will transform a yet unexamined cultural history into a social and artistic happening.
For this event, Talibam! will collaborate with artist Julia Santoli and present a live score to the moving image works Matthew has made using his father's photographic archive as source material. In this performance, Talibam! will collaborate with artist Julia Santoli.

Talibam!（2003年〜）
Kevin SheaとMatt Mottelが、NYのブルックリンで行われたラジオFree 103.9 On Airでのフリージャズカルテットの一部として組んだことをきっかけに形作られた。ニューヨークポストの見出しにちなんで彼らのデュオはTalibam!と名付けられ、Tonic、The Knitting Factory、ABC NO RIOなどの東海岸全域のスペースで定期的に演奏を始め、 2006年以来30回以上ヨーロッパでツアーを行っている。

Matthew Mottel (1981年生まれ、ニューヨーク)
アーティスト、パフォーマー、執筆家。歴史的文書とそれらの現代的文脈との関係を改善するために政治的および文化的歴史をリサーチしている。それらは主に彫刻、インターメディアインスタレーションやパフォーマンスの形で発表され、アーカイブメディアが存在するための独自の環境を作成する。これまでのアーティスト・イン・レジデンスにIssue Project Room(2010年)とLMCC Swing Space(2011年)。また、ニューヨーク近代美術館、シカゴ現代美術館、ビクトリア＆アルバート博物館(ロンドン)、The Kitchen(ニューヨーク)、Deitch Projects(ニューヨーク)、All Tomorrow's Parties Festival(ロンドン)、Moers Music(ドイツ)等で精力的に作品発表を行っている。2003年にニューパルツ大学で政治・文化研究の学士号を取得、2018年にシティカレッジのデジタルインターメディアアートプラクティスプログラムで美術修士号に向けて彼の論文展を発表。

Syeus Mottel (1930〜2014年、ニューヨーク)
舞台演出家、写真家。リー・ストラスバーグやアクターズ・スタジオ、バックミンスター・フラーのドキュメンテーションなどで知られる。自身の写真作品を「Diaristic：日記式」として定義し、彼が遭遇したジョン・ケージ、セロニアス・モンク、マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア、ウィリアム・S・バロウズ、マイルス・デイヴィス、パティ・スミス、ヴィト・アコンチ、ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ、ダイアン・アーバスを含む人物を撮影した。1973年に、ロウアー・イースト・サイド地域で発足しバックミンスター・フラーらのアイデアをもとに安価な空き家を建設する実験をした組織「CHARAS」についての記録「CHARAS: The Improbable Dome Builders」を出版した。記録集は、2017年にSong Cave PressとPioneer Worksから再出版され、2017年にはNYのSituations galleryで、彼の初個展を題材にした展示が開催された。

Julia Santoli
ニューヨークのブルックリンを拠点として、様々な学問領域を横断しながら制作を続けるアーティストで実験的なミュージシャン。Samtoliの作品は声、フィードバック、電子機器、そしてインスタレーションを使って没入的で不安定な環境を作り上げ、歌の構造の物語的な可触性を維持しながら、コラボレーティヴでサイトスペシフィックな音響アプローチの物理的な重要性を融合する。そのパフォーマンスにおける発声のアプローチは、明瞭な共鳴と極端な音の状態のどちらか一方だけになってしまうことが多いエステティックな空気の中で、傾聴し感応することで具現化する実践し、調和させる。現在、アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシルの助成金を受けており、2019年にはパイオニアワークス、2018年にはIssue Project Roomのアーティスト・イン・レジデンスに参加。

Talibam! formed in 2003 after Kevin Shea and Matt Mottel met at a Free 103.9 On Air improvisational performance in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where they were paired together as part of a free jazz quartet.
They named their duo Talibam! after a New York Post Headline and began playing regularly at Tonic, The Knitting Factory, ABC NO RIO as well as a variety of underground spaces up and down the east coast. Since 2006, Talbam! has toured Europe more than 30 times times.

Syeus Mottel (1930-2014, New York, NY) was a theater director and photographer, notable for his documentation of Lee Strasberg and the Actors Studio and Buckminster Fuller.
Syeus defined his photography as “diaristic”: he shot the people he encountered including John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Martin Luther King Jr., William S. Burroughs, Abbie Hoffman, Miles Davis, Patti Smith, Vito Acconci, Robert Rauschenberg and Diane Arbus. In 1973, Syeus published Charas, the Improbable Dome Builders, about the Lower East Side community organization CHARAS, who had been experimenting with Buckminster Fuller’s and other’s ideas to build inexpensive housing on vacant land on the Lower East Side. The book was re-published in 2017 by Song Cave Press and Pioneer Works. Matthew Mottel wrote an accompanying essay that appeared in Art News Magazine in December 2017. Syeus’s photographs were the subject of his first solo show at Situations gallery, New York in 2017.

Matthew Mottel (born 1981, New York, NY) is an artist, performer and writer. Matthew researches political and cultural histories to ameliorate the relationships between archival historical documents and their contemporary context.These investigations often are in the form of sculpture, intermedia art installation and performance; creating unique environments for archival media to exist within. Matthew was an Artist In Residence At Issue Project Room in 2010 and an LMCC Swing Space Recipient in 2011. He has presented work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; The Kitchen, New York; Deitch Projects, New York; All Tomorrow's Parties Festival; London and Moers Music, Germany. He received his B.A at SUNY New Paltz, with a degree in Political & Cultural Studies in 2003. He presented his thesis exhibition towards an M.F.A. at City College’s Digital Intermedia Art Practice program in 2018.

Julia Santoli is a multi-disciplinary artist and experimental musician based in Brooklyn, New York. Creating immersive and precarious environments with voice, feedback, electronics, and installation, her work melds the physical import of a collaborative, site-specific sonic approach while retaining the narrative accessibility of song structures. Her approach to vocalization integrates embodied practice with an attention to close listening and empathetic response, within an aesthetic atmosphere often tipping the scales between resonant clarity and extreme sonic states. She is currently an Asian Cultural Council grantee, is a 2019 Pioneer Works Music Artist in Residence, and was a 2018 Artist in Residence at Issue Project Room.
